CCU and CCS – Contributing to Climate Protection in Industry

Cement works are one area of industry where the capture, storage and utilisation of CO2 emissions that cannot be otherwise prevented provides a valuable alternative in the fight against climate change. © Dietmar Rabich (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beckum,_Zementwerk_Kollenbach_--_2014_--_8705.jpg), “Beckum, Zementwerk Kollenbach -- 2014 – 8705”, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode
Background and aims
The Paris climate agreement and its concrete expression in Germany’s Climate Action Plan have prompted a greater focus not only on the energy and transport sectors but also on CO2 emissions from industry, especially energy- and resource-intensive industrial processes. Together with the ongoing expansion of renewable energy and improvements in energy efficiency, CCUS (Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage) technology can provide a valuable third alternative for delivering Germany’s targets for reducing emissions from industry by 2050. CCUS technology can achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions from industrial processes by enabling their capture, storage and utilisation.
In September 2018, the project group chaired by Hans-Joachim Kümpel published a position paper that analyses options for using CCUS to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial processes. The group’s experts recommend that discussions involving a broad cross-section of the public should begin as soon as possible in order to address the potential of CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and the conditions required for their deployment. This will indispensable for tackling preconceptions about CCU and CCS, continuing to develop suitable technologies, and bringing them to market within the required timeframe so that the necessary infrastructure can be planned, approved, funded and built.
