Background and aims
High standards in the technological sciences are a key element of Germany’s innovation system. The project group identified two priorities for its work on quality and evaluation in this discipline. Firstly, it set out to formulate quality criteria for the technological sciences in Germany and discuss key questions such as the relative importance of quantitative and qualitative criteria and conflicts between international science and Germany’s national science culture. The discussions include aspects such as the weighting of publications, third-party funding and patents, as well as the output in terms of qualifications and careers.
The project group’s members are also formulating recommendations for safeguarding and expanding the tried-and-tested system of appointing university professors with practical experience. The appointment of technological scientists with industry experience is widely regarded as one of the strengths of the German innovation system, since it plays a key role in facilitating cooperation between science and industry.
