How Can Germany Achieve Net-Zero Emissions? 22 Areas of Action towards a Climate-Neutral Germany
In order to have a climate-neutral supply of energy, Germany must expand its technology and infrastructure: more renewable energy, heat pumps, electric mobility, electricity grids and hydrogen networks. To achieve climate neutrality, however, more is needed. The experts of the Academies project ESYS explored how Germany can become a climate-neutral country.
They focused on answering the following questions:
• How important is reducing consumption to achieving the climate targets?
• What contribution can a faster ramping-up of the technology make to achieving the targets?
• Under what circumstances would it be possible to have a climate-neutral energy supply before 2045?
• What measures would have to be put in place to achieve climate-neutral industrial production and sustainable consumption?
• How important are negative emissions in these strategies?
The statement shows that to bring about the transformation of systems that is needed, ambitious measures are required in all these areas, as this is the only way that success in some areas can make up for missed targets in others. The ESYS experts give 22 courses of action for bringing about this change.
Modelling and a systematic evaluation of existing energy scenarios served as the basis for discussion. The ESYS analysis “How can Germany achieve net-zero emissions?: scenarios” presents these.
