Format: Germany's Platform for Artificial Intelligence
Published: 05 March 2020

Artificial intelligence (AI) will improve the security of IT systems in the future. In the hands of cybercriminals, it is also a gateway for new threats to IT security. The AI systems themselves must also be protected against manipulation. This dynamic is analysed by members of the working group IT Security, Privacy, Legal and Ethical Framework of Plattform Lernende Systeme in their white paper “Artificial Intelligence and IT Security”. They outline the technological challenges that AI systems bring to the field of IT security and identify fields of action for industry, research and politics. The authors call for support, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and IT specialists in building up the corresponding competencies. In addition, they emphasize that AI systems can mitigate the lack of skilled personnel in the field of IT security by taking over routine tasks for testing IT security. The paper concludes that AI cannot replace human specialists in the field of IT security either.
