AI-based assistance systems can effectively support doctors and nurses in their work in the future. Despite all the technological possibilities, it is also important to keep the interests of patients in mind. For an exchange on how AI can be used for their benefit, Plattform Lernende Systeme invited patient representatives to a round table in Berlin in October 2019. The meeting report summarizes the perceptions of patient advocacy groups on the opportunities and challenges of AI systems in healthcare. For example, the majority of patient advocacy groups surveyed hoped for more personalized and connected treatment through AI systems, as well as more comprehensive and faster diagnosis. Challenges, on the other hand, are seen in data misuse and cybercrime. The report also addresses options for action for greater involvement of stakeholders in research, development and application of AI technologies.
