National STEM Forum
Objective of the Forum and how it sees itself
More than 30 institutions from all over Germany who are committed to promoting education in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM education) have joined forces in the National STEM Forum. Members include foundations, research institutions, trade associations, university alliances and other initiatives. These see STEM education as a key component of a well-rounded education. They represent the entire STEM education chain: from early childhood education to formal schooling and non-formal learning, vocational and academic education to training and lifelong learning.
The National STEM Forum is the national voice for policy recommendations to enhance the entire STEM education chain. Within the Forum’s working groups, recommendations for education policy and common quality standards are developed for individual strands of STEM education.
As a member of the National STEM Forum, acatech supports the association and, represented by Kristina Reiss, former spokesperson of the Education Working Group, who sits on the steering committee of the Forum, it helps to set the strategy and direction of the Forum. More information on the current work of the National STEM Forum is available on the website: www.nationalesmintforum.de (in German).
Background
The association was founded in 2012 at the instigation of acatech and “MINT Zukunft schaffen” (Creating STEM Futures), an initiative of trade associations BDA and BDI. In 2015, the then acatech President and current member of the Board of Trustees Henning Kagermann came to the end of his three-year term of office in the rotating role of spokesperson of the Forum, during which time the National STEM Forum was established as the single voice of STEM education in Germany.
Today, Edith Wolf, Managing Director of the Vector Stiftung and Carsten Busch, professor at the HTW Berlin, are co-spokespeople of the National STEM Forum.
