Industrie 4.0
Towards the fourth industrial age
On 8 April 2013, the Industrie 4.0 Working Group presented a series of concrete recommendations to Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Hannover Messe. The final report of the Working Group established by the BMBF’s Industry-Science Research Alliance sets out the requirements for a successful transition to the fourth industrial age.
On 9 April 2013, the BITKOM, VDMA and ZVEI associations established the Plattform Industrie 4.0 in order to coordinate Germany’s development into a leading market and leading supplier of state-of-the-art manufacturing technology.
Academia will also continue to actively support the implementation of this strategic project. The Plattform Industrie 4.0’s Scientific Advisory Committee, which is coordinated by acatech, held its inaugural meeting in June 2013. The Committee is made up of professors drawn from the fields of production and automation, information science, law and the sociology of work. The spokesperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee also sits on the Plattform’s steering committee.

Our economy is on the verge of a fourth industrial revolution. Through the strategic project Industrie 4.0, we can help to successfully shape this process and thus ensure that we continue to enjoy a high level of prosperity in Germany for years to come. While research can help to reorganise production processes and improve the relevant structures, it is equally important to rapidly implement research findings in companies’ day-to-day business.
Johanna Wanka, former Federal Minister of Education and Research
The factory of the future combines unprecedented flexibility with optimal resource utilisation. Industrie 4.0 offers Germany the chance to further strengthen its position as a manufacturing location, manufacturing equipment supplier and IT business solutions supplier. It is encouraging to see that all the stakeholders in Germany are now working closely together through the Plattform Industrie 4.0 in order to move ahead with implementation.
Henning Kagermann, Chairman of the acatech Board of Trustees and Co-Chair of the Industrie 4.0 Working Group
It is clear from the work that we have done together that Germany possesses all the necessary expertise in the fields of manufacturing technology and mechanical engineering to carry forward its global success into the future world of the Internet of Things and Services.
Siegfried Dais, Robert Bosch GmbH und Co-Vorsitzender Arbeitskreis Industrie 4.0
Industrie 4.0 Implementation Forum on 2 October 2012
Germany is paving the way for the fourth industrial revolution. At the Implementation Forum of the Industry-Science Research Alliance, held at the Produktionstechnisches Zentrum in Berlin on 2 October 2012, the Industrie 4.0 Working Group presented its provisional strategic recommendations for this transformation process to State Secretaries Dr. Georg Schütte (BMBF) and Ernst Burgbacher (BMWi, MdB). The recommendations will be reviewed and developed in the run-up to the Hannover Messe in April 2013, where they will be presented to the Federal Government. From this date on, a “Plattform Industrie 4.0” project office will take over the running of the project.
