Background

The goal of this project is to produce an acatech POSITION PAPER outlining the potential and the possible applications of geothermal technology for providing our metropolitan regions with sustainable, climate-neutral heating, cooling and electricity. The issues addressed include cost-effectiveness and benefits, the integration of geothermal systems within complex infrastructures, competing uses of subterranean spaces, and information and communication. The final position paper will contain policy options and best practice examples that illustrate the importance of geothermal energy as a key enabler of a successful energy transition in the heating sector. The project group comprises experts from science and industry with wide-ranging experience in this field.
