We often only start to think about safety or security when we perceive a threat or a shortage. If everything follows the plan, we often take security for granted. Yet safety and security are basic needs that pervade almost all areas of our lives. In recent years, new technologies, advancing digitalization and global crises and conflicts have led to an increasing focus on the issue of safety and security, not only in politics but also in the everyday lives of many citizens. Of course, safety and security play an important role not only on an individual level, but also on a societal and international level. It affects a wide variety of areas, from road traffic to food or the workplace to foreign policy.
So what’s all behind the two terms? How does one approach a topic scientifically and rationally, where subjective feelings play such a large role? What areas of life are affected? How are they affected? And above all: What can we do to ensure safety and security at all levels in the future? These questions will be explored in acatech HORIZONTE Safety & Security. Together with our experts, we want to decipher this very complex topic and shed some light on it.
