New European initiative to speed up the digital transformation in the media sector

Munich, 09 October 2023
Today marks the start of work by the Trusted European Media Data Space (TEMS), a consortium powered by the European Union aiming to boost the competitiveness of European media companies. The consortium, consisting of 43 companies and organisations in the cultural and creative sectors, is developing a common media data space across Europe. acatech is a consortium member on a number of sub-projects.
The initiative is a core element in the implementation of the European Data Strategy and is funded by the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL) of the European Commission. The data space will create a powerful infrastructure that will enable European media organisations to develop new, cooperative, data-based business models. The aim of the National Academy of Science and Engineering in participating in this initiative is to strengthen independent media outlets and to boost the innovative capacity of Germany and Europe in relation to media.

Within the TEMS consortium, the Academy will coordinate the sub-project “Media Data Ecosystem Adoption & Governance”. This will focus on the legal framework for sharing data and embedding data in the virtual space. Trust in structures and stakeholders is set to be ensured and increased by guaranteeing data sovereignty and transparency in relation to data use.
In addition, acatech is involved in the flagship use case “Audience Data Recommendations & Personalization”. Headed up by the dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur news agency, this sub-project will work on the Europe-wide harmonisation and standardisation of data categories. The rationale is that better data quality is essential for small and medium-sized enterprises in particular to have data-driven business models, and thus to facilitate new competitive opportunities.
Last but not least, acatech is a contributor to the sub-project “Media Data Space Outreach, Community Scale Up & Sustainability” under the leadership of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN).
