Pathway to industrial transformation: acatech at Hannover Messe

Munich, 14 April 2023
Hannover Messe, one of the world’s leading industrial trade fairs, starts on 17 April. The focus of this year’s fair is the transformation of industry towards a climate-friendly and sustainable economy. acatech is contributing in various ways: with its design proposals for a digital battery passport, with the Industrie 4.0 Research Council’s ideas, with the Gaia-X Hub Germany and with the AI platform Lernende Systeme. An overview.
Digital battery passport: acatech President Thomas Weber will present Content Guide to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK)
The battery is a ubiquitous feature of climate-friendly energy supply, industry and mobility. Because batteries are expensive and require many rare raw materials they should ideally be used in a circular process, repaired and recycled. For this to happen, relevant up-to-date information about their type and use is required over the entire life of the battery. An EU Regulation provides for all batteries to have a digital battery passport, which can be retrieved, for example, via a QR code. A consortium put together from industry, science and NGOs has drawn up a guide on what exactly it should contain. On 17 April State Secretary Michael Kellner (BMWK) will be presented with the “Battery Pass Content Guide” by Spie Herrmann (Systemiq) and acatech President Thomas Weber.

Smart, energy-efficient and sustainable Industrie 4.0: Research Council highlights pathways
Digitalisation and sustainability can be thought of as two sides of the same coin. This was shown in a study conducted by a project team led by acatech Vice-President Christopf M. Schmidt recently, and members of the Industrie 4.0 Research Council, which is coordinated by acatech, will also highlight this in their lectures and discussions at #HM23:
Industrie 4.0 Research Council at the Plattform Industrie 4.0 joint stand
Where: Halle 8, Stand D26
When: 17 to 21 April 2023, throughout
Further information: What is the situation with the digital and environmental transformation of industry? For five days at the trade fair, representatives of the Industrie 4.0 Research Council will share the stage with prominent experts from science, politics and industry to discuss development prospects.
Keynote speech “Future-proof production – Sustainable, flexible, productive and resilient” by Research Council member Thomas Bauernhansl
Where: “Technology Academy” at Exhibition Centre Pavillon 36, Room “Technikhalle”
When: Wednesday, 19 April 2023 from 3.10 p.m. to 3.40 p.m.

Panel discussion “Decentralized! Resilient! Renewable! – Is the energy self-sufficient industry an unattainable ideal?” with Research Council member Julia Arlinghaus
Where: Industrial Transformation Stage in Halle 3, Stand B48
When: Thursday, 20 April 2023 from 9.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m.

Other Industrie 4.0 Research Council panel discussions and lectures focus on the use of industry data. The arrival of ChatGPT has dispelled whatever doubt there was that artificial intelligence (AI) is making huge progress in the area of data analysis and utilisation – from which industry, too, can benefit. Members of the Research Council will go into the current challenges:
Expert Panel “Towards a federated industry data ecosystem” with Research Council member Björn Sautter
Where: Industrie 4.0 Conference Stage in Halle 8, Stand D17.
When: Wednesday, 19 April 2023 from 11.45 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
Further information
Lecture on the new Research Council expertise “Design, usage, and commercialization of an industrial data pool” by member Uwe Kubach
Where: Industrie 4.0 Conference Stage in Halle 8, Stand D17
When: Friday, 21 April 2023 from 2.15 p.m. to 2.55 p.m.

Gaia-X: data economy in a European and environment context
The acatech-coordinated Gaia-X initiative examines the possibilities of a data economy for Germany and Europe, and is putting in place the appropriate digital infrastructure. From 17 to 21 April 2023 visitors to the Plattform Industrie 4.0 joint stand will be able to see how Gaia-X is creating trustworthy and resilient infrastructure for industry and, at the same time, is conserving resources. The community will be exhibiting its projects – including from the areas of health, production, artificial intelligence, mobility and the public sector. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck will come to Hanover on the second day of the trade fair and will check out the latest developments in the Gaia-X projects.
Where: Halle 8, Stand D26
When: 17 to 21 April 2023, throughout
Plattform Lernende Systeme: robotics in the skilled trades
Robotic systems are increasingly able to acquire skills and learn on the basis of data as well as by interacting with people and their environment. Their simplified and situational adaptability makes them increasingly attractive for the manufacture of individual pieces. During the Panel Discussion “Learning Robotics in Industrial Production and in Skill Trades”, members of Plattform Lernende Systeme, an acatech-coordinated platform for learning systems, will discuss the associated opportunities.
Where: Tech Transfer Conference Stage in Halle 2, Stand A60
When: Wednesday, 19 April 2023 from 2.50 p.m. to 3.50 p.m.
