Autumn meeting of the topic network Materials Science and Engineering

In mid-October, acatech members of the topic network Materials Science and Engineering and their spokesman Frank Mücklich, came together at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin-Adlershof for their autumn meeting. The President of BAM, Ulrich Panne (gallery picture 1), greeted the participants and explained the BAM’s task as well as fields of activity. Afterwards, Peter Fratzl, Director at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (gallery picture 3), introduced the meeting’s topic of Engineered Living Systems (ELS) – in other words, the combination resulting from the interplay between living cells and material. Wilfried Weber, Scientific Director of the Leibniz Institute for New Materials, and Chris Eberl, Deputy Director at the Fraunhofer Institute IWM, added to and intensified the topic with their contributions. In the end, the participants discussed potential areas of application, opportunities and challenges in light of a possible contribution of ELS to the circular economy.
