“The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data,” was the headline on the cover of The Economist back in 2017. This development has only accelerated with the popularization of artificial intelligence. In order to strengthen a flourishing data economy here in Germany and Europe, we need an efficient infrastructure that is open to local public and private players and meets European data protection standards.
This challenge requires the close coordination of all stakeholders involved. acatech is ideally positioned in its role as an advisor to politics and society to bring research, the private sector and society together and significantly advance the implementation of the federal government’s digital strategy.

I want a Europe that is a pioneer in important key technologies. Let’s take the mobility of the future. Data will play a decisive role here – for autonomous driving, for networking different means of transportation or for the intelligent control of traffic flows. That is why we need a uniform, cross-border European area for mobility data as quickly as possible.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz
MISSION KI
Artificial intelligence – made in Germany
MISSION KI – National Initiative for Artificial Intelligence and Data Economy is a joint project of acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDV). The lever project of the Federal Government’s digital strategy aims to strengthen digital competitiveness and is funded by the Federal Government with 32 million euros. The initiative pursues three goals: MISSION KI aims to expand the database for AI innovations and to network data spaces across sectors and national borders for this purpose. MISSION KI aims to create transparent AI quality and testing standards in accordance with German and European values. To this end, MISSION KI will establish AI quality and innovation centers, i.e. testing and experimentation environments and public experience spaces. MISSION KI aims to support the growth of AI innovations. To this end, MISSION KI brings investors together with AI founders and companies and develops non-financial measures that make it easier for researchers to establish spin-offs.
National contact point for data ecosystems and Gaia-X
The Gaia-X Hub Germany is the national point of contact for anyone interested in the sovereign exchange of data. Its aim is to support the development of an international data economy that is in line with European values and economic structures. To this end, the Gaia-X Hub promotes the development and use of Gaia-X in Germany, a central project in Europe’s digital strategy. Gaia-X creates an ecosystem of networked data spaces in which data can be linked, securely shared and easily ported between different systems using standards, open interfaces and open source technology. As a networking platform, the Gaia-X Hub brings together representatives from science, business, politics and society to exchange experiences, gain insights and jointly put them into practice.
Mobility Data Space – the data marketplace for the mobility sector As a neutral player, the Mobility Data Space (MDS) offers 150+ participants a sharing community that enables networking, data trading and collaboration in a dynamic mobility ecosystem. As an innovative data space, MDS creates a cross-company data economy in order to realize and further develop innovative, environmentally and user-friendly mobility concepts. MDS brings together companies, organizations and institutions: those who want to monetize their data treasures and those who need data for innovative mobility solutions, but in many cases also to create a win-win situation for mutual benefit through a targeted exchange.
With the aim of making mobility safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly, the MDS is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and is therefore a neutral and trustworthy partner. It is intended to pave the way for a networked and secure data infrastructure in Europe that complies with European values such as data protection, data sovereignty and interoperability.
The Mobility Data Space is run by the non-profit organization DRM Datenraum Mobilität GmbH, which emerged from an acatech project.
Borderless mobility through European data harmonization
The European Mobility Data Space (EMDS) extends the vision of the Mobility Data Space to create a pan-European ecosystem for the exchange of mobility-related data. As a first step in this direction, the deployEMDS project, co-funded by the European Union, is testing innovative data sharing in nine European cities and regions. In doing so, deployEMDS not only supports the demonstration of new technologies, but also actively lays the foundations for a common European mobility data space. The long-term goal of EMDS is to promote an integrated and sustainable transport infrastructure that encompasses all modes of transport in Europe. Sharing data across national borders supports the development of cross-border and innovative mobility services that enable more efficient and inclusive mobility in Europe.
The Datenraum Kultur connects cultural institutions, the creative industries and the cultural public. As one of the flagship projects of the German government’s digital strategy, it offers an innovative and sovereign infrastructure for the secure exchange of cultural data in Germany.
With its connected value-added services, the data room enables machine-readable theater schedules, virtual museum visits and networked cultural platforms. These applications open up new ways of cultural participation and networking.
Thanks to the decentralized approach, control over both the data and the revenues remains with the creative artists, which guarantees their digital sovereignty and at the same time promotes the development of innovative products and services.
The Trusted European Media Data Space (TEMS) is a pioneering project that establishes a secure and transparent data infrastructure for the European media space. It enables media companies to use data responsibly while preserving media freedom and integrity. TEMS supports innovative journalistic approaches and the development of media products based on reliable information, thus strengthening the role of the media as a pillar of democratic society in Europe.
