In nuclear fusion, two light atomic nuclei fuse to form a heavier one, releasing a great deal of energy in the process. This energy could be used in a variety of ways and help to meet growing global demand for energy in a climate-friendly way.

German companies are already building important components for fusion technologies that are used in other countries. However, there are as yet no functioning fusion power plants. How should a market environment for the development of fusion power plants be structured? How can the transfer of technology from science to industry be organised and how can the risks to public funds be kept to a minimum? What instruments can be used to stimulate private investment and how can an attractive environment be created for national and international investors?

This acatech IMPULSE sheds light on these and other questions, focusing on the business and regulatory environment that enables innovation and makes Germany an attractive location for investors and companies from the fusion ecosystem.
