© acatech

Berlin, 14 October 2024

In mid-October, the members of the acatech Thematic Network Materials Science and Engineering met at DIN e.V. in Berlin for their fall meeting under the leadership of spokesperson Frank Mücklich and deputy speaker Christine Selhuber-Unkel. The meeting focused on the EU communication “Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership” published at the beginning of 2024.

Before the meeting began, Volker Seibicke (Head of the Standardization Department at DIN e.V.) gave the participants a brief insight into examples of standardization during a tour of the DIN NORMEN WERK. The spectrum shown ranged from toothbrushes, children’s toys and steps to sea containers. Daniela Rickert (member of DIN’s extended management board) then welcomed the guests.

After keynote speeches by Peter Hassenbach (Head of Department 523 “Material Innovations; Hereon” of the BMBF), Ehrenfried Zschech (BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, EuMaT Steering Committee), Stephan Fengler (Head of Research & Development Silica, Evonik Operations GmbH) and Dominik Britz (CEO SurFunction GmbH), the participants entered into the discussion.

The session concluded with the introduction of new members of the Materials Science and Engineering Network and information from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Fraunhofer Group for Materials and Components and the German Society for Materials Science (DGM).
