Blockchain in development cooperation
The Building Blocks project of the United Nations World Food Programme’s INNOVATION ACCELERATOR
With its motto of “Innovations for Zero Hunger”, the Innovation Accelerator of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) aims to identify innovative technologies that can contribute to transparent and efficient development aid. One such solution is provided by the Building Blocks project. Launched in 2017, this WFP-led initiative has introduced a blockchain-based cash transfers system for refugees living in camps in Pakistan and Jordan. Blockchain technology can deliver significant benefits for development cooperation work in countries that lack established infrastructures and trusted authorities. Over 100,000 people living in the camps covered by the project can already use iris scans to access their digital wallets, allowing transparent, cashless shopping for everyday necessities. The aim is to increase this number to one million by 2019.
The INNOVATION ACCELERATOR is a partner of acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering. More information on the Building Blocks project is available at innovation.wfp.org/project/building-blocks and on Twitter: @WFPInnovation
